What Porta Potty Rental Costs

Published national ranges give a starting point for a day, a week and a month. A real quote depends on the unit, the service schedule and the site.

Short answer

  • Fixr's national range is $80 to $175 for one day, $150 to $300 for a week and $100 to $500 for a month.
  • A month costs far less per day than a single day, so compare quotes for the whole rental period rather than a daily rate.
  • Unit type, number of units, service visits, distance and permits move a quote up or down.

These are U.S. national figures from Fixr, a cost guide that compiles pricing databases, contractor estimates and industry input. They are not Richmond or Virginia data, and they are not a quote from Fan District Restrooms. Use them to judge whether a quote is in a normal range, then read the factors below.

What moves a quote

  • Unit type. Fixr's type table prices accessible, flushing, deluxe and high-rise units above a standard unit. A restroom trailer is quoted separately.
  • Rental length. Fixr notes that short rentals typically include one service visit after the rental ends, and that the discount grows with a week or a month.
  • Service visits. Heavy use, heat or a long event can require extra pumping, which is usually billed per visit.
  • Number of units. The event page shows how guests and hours set the count, and hand-wash stations add to it.
  • Distance and access. A long drive, a narrow alley or soft ground takes more time and equipment.
  • Permits and traffic control. In Richmond, a unit in the street or alley needs a Work in Streets Permit, whose fee depends on the work and its duration. Ask whether the quote includes it.
  • Dates. Fixr notes that a weekend rental may run two or three days, with pickup on Monday. Busy weekends book up first.

What to ask your rental contact

  • Which unit, and how many, the price covers.
  • Whether delivery, pickup and each service visit are included.
  • What supplies are restocked on a visit.
  • What happens if a unit is damaged or needs an extra visit.
  • Whether any permit, traffic-control or fuel charge is added.

Common questions

Why does a one-day rental cost almost as much as a week?

Most of a short rental's cost is the trip: loading, driving, placing and later collecting the unit. Fixr notes that transportation and setup cost the supplier a lot, so the fewer trips a rental needs per day of use, the lower the daily price. That is why its one-day and one-week ranges overlap even though the week covers seven times as many days.

Does an accessible unit cost more than a standard unit?

Usually. Fixr's type table lists accessible units above standard and flushing units, and deluxe units highest. Ask your rental contact to price the accessible unit as its own line. At a public event the accessible units page explains how many each cluster needs, which fixes part of the order before price is discussed.

Is servicing included in the rental price?

It depends on the terms. Fixr notes that short rentals typically include one service visit after the rental ends. Longer rentals are usually quoted with a recurring visit, but the number of visits, what each one includes and the charge for extra visits vary by provider. Ask for the service schedule in writing with the quote.

Does the quote include a Richmond street permit?

Not unless the quote lists it. A unit in a Richmond street, sidewalk or alley needs a Work in Streets Permit from Public Works, with a fee based on the work and its duration and, for a contractor applicant, an insurance certificate. Ask who applies and who pays before accepting the quote.
